The African aviation business is a largely untapped market. It’s characterized by fierce protectionism, bureaucracy and a lack of infrastructure. Yet air travel would seen to be the natural way of crossing the continent. Fastjet is a Tanzanian based company created along the lines of UK-based easyJet, which had success in Europe in the 1990s. Analysts believe Africa is ready for this kind of airline. Fastjet announced on Monday that international flight operations will commence on Friday October 18, after being forced to pull an earlier attempt at a maiden international flight, from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg. Its first flight, is scheduled to depart at 09:15 from Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport in Tanzania to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg arriving at 11:45, local time.
